VJ Grocery

VJ Grocery

VJ Grocery got its name because it opened on August 15, 1945, when Japan surrendered in World War II, which is known as V-J Day (Victory over Japan Day). This was a significant day for all Americans. Our business is also well-known because it has been featured in several motion pictures, including the famous film Bullitt (1968) starring Steve McQueen and directed by Peter Yates. Steve McQueen’s character’s apartment was directly across the street from the store, and he would frequent the store in the film and purchase TV dinners. Today, you can still buy frozen foods at VJ Grocery as well as other essential groceries. The store is a gathering place on Nob Hill where neighbors can grab a cup of coffee and snack, sit outside with their dogs next to the fresh flowers, and get to know their close-knit community.
